To answer your question, yes it's abstract. He smudged the effects which I don't really get. It looks like a scattered chalk brush smudge or a basic splatter brush smudge, since the effects are smooth and circular based the grungy smudge is kinda like a distraction. Use a hard round scattered circle brush rather than a grungy smudge brush. It also looks like you sharpened it too much since the edges are pixely. With abstract effects dont sharpen them, just try to go with the flow. Keep it up.
